Mrs. Madura's 5th grade students, with help from Clinton resident and architect Peggy Sullivan of George Penniman Architects in Essex, competed in CANstruciton on May 14th 2012, an annual competition sponsored by AIA in which teams of students build structures made entirely out of canned food items.  All the food collected is later donated to the Connecticut Food Bank and Foodshare.
These fifth graders started the process of creating their "Can -cakes" months ago.  They began by brainstorming ideas individually, then worked in small teams to refine a few ideas.  Each team then chose one idea to present to the class.  From there the class voted on one idea that they would all work to build.  The three layers of pancakes were made from cans of baked beans.  They were surrounded by a plate built from sardines, a fork, and a cup of juice made from mixed fruit.

We are very proud of these fifth graders for working as a team and cooperating.  Their efforts are another step in the fight to end hunger!
