Message From Teresa Gingrave
Dear Families,
Our students are growing each and every day as readers, mathematicians, artists, musicians, scientists, and so much more! We continue to teach a growth mindset grounded on the belief that we can always grow and improve. Mistakes are okay to make because they help us learn and understand concepts in a deeper way.
Monster Mash is this weekend! The FOJ has included a time for children who have sensory needs to participate in the Monster Mash with fewer overwhelming sights, sounds, and crowds. Please take advantage of these "Sensory Friendly" activities if your child gets easily overwhelmed! The Monster Mash Sensory Friendly hour is 4:00-4:45. General admission is 4:45-7:30.
Water Watchers Program by CT Water visited third grade today. Through this program, students learned about water conservation. This presentation helped students build background knowledge for the upcoming literacy unit about water.
The Rotary Club is coming on Thursday, October 22nd to donate dictionaries to each third-grade student.
Our Lost and Found is growing in size. Please ask your child to visit the lost and found outside our cafeteria during their lunch break.
Upcoming Seasonal Events: Spirit Days are here! Check the schedule of spirit events.
Have a great weekend!

This week some of our second graders have been experiencing math lessons in room 31 (Joel conference room) where they stand at various white boards and discuss mathematical ideas. This approach is designed to get students active, collaborating, and taking risks. By standing up in small, randomly assigned groups, kids are less likely to disengage or hide behind a desk. Because dry-erase boards are erasable, students feel much more comfortable making mistakes and trying out bold ideas without the fear of permanent failure. Standing at eye level also makes everyone’s thinking visible across the room, allowing groups to easily build on each other's ideas while enabling the teacher to quickly see who needs help or a new challenge. Ask your child what they thought of this experience. Thanks Mrs. Baldwin, 4th grade math teacher for guiding some of these lessons.
First grade had their first Town Hall as a community! They focused on the word “P” in PACK to discuss what Pride means. They discussed how to show pride as a learner by following directions, applying their best effort and keeping their work space neat. Some students were recognized for their community contributions. Thanks to our 1st grade team for their investment in their students!
Third Grade Math Update: Students have wrapped up Unit 1 [addition and subtraction strategies] in math and are excited to be focusing on multiplication [one of the most important topics in third grade]. Students have visited a pet store and have looked at other multiplicative situations in the real world. Students are using a variety of ways to represent multiplication including equal groups, arrays, the number line, and ratio tables. In the pet store, students added and multiplied items to figure out totals using some of these multiplication strategies. Ask them about it!
