Decision Making Process

The Clinton Community Committee on Facility Needs (“CCC on Facility Needs”) was formed to review, examine, and possibly restructure the use of Clinton’s school facilities.  After several months of study, the CCC on Facility Needs made the recommendation to the Board of Education to formally close Abraham Pierson School and realign the grade levels in the district.

On October 23, 2018, Superintendent of Schools Maryann O'Donnell presented the recommendation made by the CCC on Facility Needs to the Board of Education.  The presentation summarized the proposed reorganization of grades pk-8 and the future status of Abraham Pierson School.

The Board of Education created a means for submission of comments and questions related to the decision to close Pierson Elementary School and realign the grades in Joel Elementary to be pK-4 and Eliot Middle School to be 5-8.  The submission period began on October 23, 2018 and concluded on October 30, 2018.  A total of 39 submissions were received, 37 through the online portal and 2 were delivered in hard copy to Central Office.  All 39 were compiled and provided to Board of Education members prior to the Regular Meeting of November 5, 2018.

On November 5, 2018, the Clinton Board of Education formally accepted the recommendation to close Abraham Pierson School at the conclusion of the 2018-2019 school year and to realign our schools beginning in the 2019-2020 school year so that Lewin G. Joel Jr. School consists of prekindergarten through grade 4 and Jared Eliot Middle School consists of grades 5 through 8.

Additionally, the Board of Education authorized the Superintendent and Administration to develop and implement a transition plan related to the programming, scheduling, and moving necessary for the closure of Pierson and realignment of grades in the district.
