In the Classroom

5th Grade:

Math - Students have been gradually transitioning from area models of multi-digit multiplication to the more efficient Partial Product strategy.  This will be a great segue to the introduction of the Standard Algorithm.  In addition, our mathematicians are exploring relationships between numbers (fractions, decimals, and powers of 10) to be more flexible in their mental calculations.

Science - Students are continuing their journey through our solar system.  They have researched, observed, and modeled the phases of the moon.  In addition, students are examining the opportunities and requirements needed to explore other planets - particularly the role sunlight plays in powering a rover.  Some students designed an engineering plan to enable a rover to function on Mars and Jupiter!

ELA - Some classes are working on comparing characters’ reactions to various events in Esperanza Rising by using the Painted Essay model. Meanwhile, others are beginning the work of creating character monologues in the first person point of view to express views on those same events in the book. Ask your child what their favorite event from Esperanza Rising was!

6th Grade:

Science - Students have a special guest visit from UMASS. A PhD student, Billi Kozak, visited Grade 6 science classes to teach us about microbiology and their work studying microbiomes. We were thrilled to have a former Eliot alum share their STEM work.

Math - Students continue to tackle ratio word problems, using close reading to dissect the problem.

Social Studies - Students focused on the 13 Colonies! Students learned and reviewed important vocabulary related to colonial life and explored the three colonial regions: New England, Middle, and Southern Colonies. We also mapped out the 13 Colonies, identifying where each colony was located and how they were grouped by region. We are building our understanding of early American history one colony at a time!

ELA - This week in ELA, we wrapped up Unit 1 of The Lightning Thief with an end-of-unit assessment. Students reflected on the many challenges Percy faced throughout his journey and participated in discussions about how he responded to and overcame these obstacles. We explored how Percy's experiences helped him grow as a character and what we can learn from his perseverance, courage, and determination. It was a great opportunity to bring together our reading, comprehension, and character analysis skills!

7th Grade:

English - This week in English, we began Unit 2 while continuing to read A Long Walk to Water. Students will practice using the five senses to make their narrative writing more descriptive and engaging. We will also focus on identifying central ideas in nonfiction texts and supporting our thinking with evidence.

Science - Students in 7th grade science are exploring the conservation of matter and learning that matter cannot be created or destroyed. Through hands-on activities and investigations, students are discovering how matter changes during physical and chemical reactions.

Math - Math students are working this week to finish studying circle area and circumference and will have an assessment early next week.

Social Studies - Students are learning about the various Pharaohs in Egypt. We will be looking at King Tut and the discovery of his tomb.

8th Grade:

We are excited to share a few additional online resources that can help your child continue building confidence and growing academically in both reading and math. Consistent practice, even for a few minutes each day, can make a big difference!

Here are two great resources students can use at home:

1. Khan Academy (MAP Recommended Practice) – Personalized Math Practice

Students have access to Khan Academy Mappers, which use their individual scores to identify areas of strength and skills that need additional support. These personalized learning pathways help students work toward the math level that is right for them, filling in gaps and building a strong foundation for future learning. Students have access to the link in their math Google Classroom Stream.

2. IXL – Reading/ELA and Math Practice

Visit www.ixl.com for additional practice in both English Language Arts (ELA) and math. Students can access 10 free practice questions per day without a paid membership. This is a great way to reinforce classroom learning, strengthen skills, and build confidence.

A Little Practice Goes a Long Way!

We encourage families to help students make these resources part of their weekly routine. Even 10-15 minutes of focused practice a few times a week can support continued growth and help students feel more confident in the classroom.

Thank you for partnering with us to support your child's learning and success. Together, we can help every student reach their full potential!

Spanish 1 - Students are learning comparisons, the verbs poder and dormir, and bedroom vocabulary. A quiz is scheduled for this week. Daily review at home is essential for success!

Spanish 2 - Students are beginning the imperfect tense while exploring vocabulary related to childhood memories. This unit requires focus, attention, and consistent practice and review.

Native/Heritage Spanish - Students are wrapping up their unit, Graffiti: Art or Vandalism? They will create their own art wall and determine the message they want to communicate through their artwork.

Parent Reminder - Your involvement makes a difference! Please encourage your child to review class materials regularly, stay on top of assignments, and complete their work on time. Thank you for your continued support!
